Find a Penny...
Every time I see a coin on the street, I stop, pick it up, put it into my pocket, and say out loud "Thank you, God, for this symbol of abundance that keeps flowing into my life..." Wayne Dyer
I paid a visit to the Garden Section of Home Depot today. Struggling to direct the flat cart through the perennials, I finally made my selections and headed for the check-out booth. As I waited, I looked down at the floor, and there it was- a penny. The gentleman in front of me glanced over as I picked the coin up. I noticed that he was someone of my generation, so I said, “Remember this: ‘Find a penny (and then he joined in), pick it up, and all the day you’ll have Good Luck!’” Spontaneously, I reached out to him, offering him the coin and its inherent good luck. He gently declined and wished the good luck on me. The line stuttered ahead, and as the gentleman reached the cashier, we simultaneously looked down and saw another penny- right next to him! He picked it up and said, “Well, I guess now I’ll have my own good luck!” We had a laugh and an excellent human moment. I identified the exchange as a coincidence.
Everyone knows what a coincidence is. The “occurrence of events that happen at the same time by accident but seem to have some connection.” Merriam-Webster We have all had the experience of thinking about calling someone and, “Ring, Ring,” they call us. Or how about meeting up with a friend, and you are both wearing the same shirt? How about running into a college friend at O’Hare? I had a coincidence a few days ago. I had asked my daughter if she had any gates because I was getting a new kitten. She didn’t. While driving home from my errands, I passed a house with a gate put out for garbage. It looked good, so I asked the lady of the house if I could take it. She said yes, and as I removed it to put in my car, I noticed it was as clean and perfect as brand new! Lol! Can you think of a recent coincidence you have noticed in your life?
It may seem odd to quote James Redfield, author of the Celestine Prophecy series, because of his ironic turn on the definition of “coincidence,” as you will read in this paragraph. People tend to think of a coincidence as a “one-and-done” occurrence—a curiosity for the moment. However, Redfield states, “I don’t think anything happens by coincidence. No one is here by accident. Everyone who crosses our path has a message for us. Otherwise, they would have taken another path, or left earlier or later. The fact that these people are here means that they are in our lives for some reason.”1
I believe we are all intricately connected because of my various investigations of time and space. Perhaps you have heard of the “Butterfly Effect.” ”2 There is a fairly common saying that states, “If a butterfly flaps its wings, it can cause a hurricane.” The article “Can a Butterfly Flapping Its Wings Really Cause a Hurricane? says, “You’ve probably heard of the so-called “butterfly effect,” a bit of popularized science that suggests the minor perturbations of a single butterfly flapping its wings has the power to set off a string of escalating events that can lead to the formation of a hurricane.” ”3 Have you ever innocuously done something that has affected someone else’s life? It happens. Connections are always happening by the gazillions! Think about this phenomenon compared to the systems connecting our cell phones and related technology!
Redfield says, “You can get in touch with the most exciting part of life. That is, watching the mysterious coincidences happen that lead us toward a particular destiny and in believing that our lives are going somewhere that will help to make the world a better place.” ”4
A stranger and I picking up pennies at the same time and acknowledging it between ourselves led me to write these few thoughts. I hope they give you something to think about. Thanks for reading!
